The Icebergs Swimming Club on Bondi Beach is world-famous. Maybe because it takes five years to become a member, after having been referred by an existing member.
The Club was founded in 1929 by a few local lifeguards, who wanted to stay in shape and keep on swimming in winter.
"They formed the Bondi Icebergs Winter Swimming Club, drew up a constitution and elected office bearers. Included in the constitution was a rule that to maintain membership it was mandatory that swimmers compete on three Sundays out of four for a period of five years. This rule, known as the “15B rule” still exists and has been the source of much commentary over the years." Quoted from icebergs.com
The Bondi Icebergs Club is the only swimming club in the world licensed as a Winter Swimming Club.
Below you can see the history of the Icebergs Club
Don't miss your chance to swim in these historic waters. Be sure to pack your swimsuit, cap, goggles, and flip-flops for your Coogee to Bondi coastal walk in the morning.
The entrance to the pool and sauna is AU$8 per adult. You can also rent a locker key at the reception, and then it is time to head down to the pool.
If you have never been in a rock pool, this will be an experience unlike any other. Never have you been closer to nature while being in a man-made pool. The Icebergs Pool is famous for its crashing wave overflowing the pool.
Take a dip, swim for a workout, or just for enjoyment and take in the views and atmosphere.
As a highlight of your visit, sit in the corner closest to the ocean and get sprayed by seawater, as the waves crash onto the pool. Be careful, though! Some waves might be stronger than you think and smack you off the side into the pool. Make sure not to sit too close to the corner and its other wall.
Wanna get a taste of the joy playing in the waves as well as the strength nature has? Hit play 😅!
After your exciting swim, it is time for a snack and some well-deserved drinks at the Bondi Icebergs Club. There are a fancy dining room and bar, which you are not allowed to enter in athletic clothes and the Icebergs Terrace at the end of the building. There you can enjoy the view and your drinks.
